Mental health support

Anxious, overwhelmed, stressed, sad – these are all feelings that many students experience at some point during their studies, for a variety of reasons. Support key:
IS: Students whose first language isn’t English / International Students
FN: Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander/First Nations Students

I need emergency mental health support

Emergency Services
If you feel like you can’t keep yourself safe, or you’re supporting someone in a crisis, dial triple zero (000) for emergency services (fire/ambulance/police). Calling the police or an ambulance is the quickest way to get help in an emergency.

Campus Security
In an emergency, always call emergency services first. You could notify Campus Security on +61 2 9351 3333 or 1800 SYD HLP (1800 793 457) after calling the emergency services. Campus Security are available 24 hours a day to assist with an emergency or safety threat. Our security officers are certified to perform first aid, and their vehicles are equipped with automatic defibrillators.
🔗 More info about Campus Security is available on the university’s website ↗

Counselling options for students who have been subjected to sexual violence
Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA) offer a free, confidential clinic with experienced counsellors available to speak to you. If you’d like to access support from RPA, you don’t need to also speak to anyone at the University about what happened to you. However, if you would like to speak to someone at USyd, please look at the “Sexual Violence” tab for more information on support. Campus Security can also arrange transport for you to RPA. IS
🔗 Info about RPA Community Health Sexual Assault Service, and how to book an appointment, can be found on their website ↗

Have a look at our 'I’d like to access community support' tab for info on helplines and other support options outside of the University.

I’d like some mindfulness resources

Relaxing, mindfulness, and taking some time for yourself might seem difficult when you’re a busy student. However, just 10 minutes of meditation, a quick breathing exercise or writing down 5 things you’re grateful of every day could slowly start to improve your wellbeing, outlook on life and resilience.

You can search for free resources on sites like YouTube for beginners' guides to all the above and find out what works for you.

The University also have some useful self-help resources on their website. You could also enrol in the University’s “Head Set” module on Canvas for more help on managing your psychological wellbeing.
🔗 The University’s website has some useful tips and resources on mindfulness techniques and information on how to enrol in “Head Set” ↗

I’m experiencing grief

Grief can look different for different people, and no matter how long ago you lost a loved one, it could still be impacting you. You might be feeling depressed, numb, confused, overwhelmed, or angry, but there is a lot of support available to you whenever you’re ready to access it.

Griefline offers free telephone support for anyone experiencing grief and loss across Australia. You can call them on 1300 845 745. They offer a service in multiple language, and you can discuss your accessibility requirements with them too. IS, SD

Have a look at the “Counselling” tab for information about the University’s Student Counselling Service.

If you feel like your studies have been affected, you might want to apply for special consideration from the University.
