Celebrating 150 Years of USU

USU 150 Years Header GIF

The USU has changed radically over 150 years and so have the organisations that merged to create it.

Starting in 1874 and 1914 respectively, the Sydney University Union (SUU) and Sydney University Women’s Union (SUWU) evolved on many occasions throughout their existence before finally merging in 1972 to form the USU and it has done nothing but change since.

Embracing new activities and services, weathering changes to its fees and income, and reinventing itself with the advent of each new phase of campus life and student culture. In its newly amalgamated form, the USU pursued greater involvement with clubs and societies, quickly became the dominant organiser of O-Week (now Welcome Week), and became a hub for live music, comedy, and the performing arts.

Facing obstacles like Voluntary Student Unionism in 2005 and seizing new opportunities like the Student Services and Amenities Fee in 2011, the USU has grown stronger with every challenge.

What the next 150 years hold for the USU is anyone’s guess, but there’s no doubt that the USU won’t ever stop changing.
