We've incorporated!

From 1 April 2026, USU officially transitioned to a new incorporated entity, USU Ltd.

What is incorporation?

Incorporation is a legal process by which an association becomes a distinct legal entity from its members. This process allows the organisation itself to own property, enter into contracts, and continue its existence independent of changes in the Board or management.

This also means that the organisation, rather than its members, bears legal responsibility for its actions. This allows for greater flexibility and certainty for USU, protection for members, and an improved ability for USU to receive grants and other benefits which require USU to exist as a legal entity.

Previously a Member and unable to access your account?

If you were a Member of the former USU, but you have not yet completed your membership with the new incorporated entity, USU Ltd, your account access expired on 30 June 2026.

On 1 April 2026, the unincorporated USU transitioned to the new incorporated entity, USU Ltd. Existing members were given a grace period to continue accessing their membership while completing the transition. That grace period ended on 30 June 2026.

As a result, if you hadn’t completed your USU Ltd membership, you can no longer access your account or member benefits.

Don't worry, reactivating your membership is quick and easy. Simply complete your USU Ltd membership to join USU Ltd and restore your access and continue enjoying all your member benefits.

FAQs

What is incorporation?

Incorporation means registering the USU as a separate legal entity under Australian law.

This allows USU to operate in its own name—enter contracts, hold assets, and take on responsibilities independently.

Why is USU incorporating?

USU is incorporating to:

  • Become a separate legal entity

  • Ensure long-term sustainability and transparency

  • Be well-positioned for future growth

Will members need to join USU Ltd?

Yes. Australian law requires members to provide consent to move to the new legal entity.

Joining USU Ltd provides that consent.

Will I lose access to clubs or services?

No.

  • Club access will continue

  • No need to re-join clubs

  • Your eligibility remains unchanged

  • Accept USU Ltd Terms

  • Complete by 30 June 2026

New members:

Will I get a refund if I don’t join USU Ltd?

No, refunds will not be issued if you choose not to transition.

Can I vote in the 2026 Board Elections?

Yes. If you join on or after 1 April 2026, you will be a member of both entities until rolls close and are eligible to vote in the upcoming Board Election.

When does the transition period end?

30 June 2026. This is the final date of the current (unincorporated) USU.

What happens after 30 June?

Existing memberships will expire on 30 June 2026. You must join USU Ltd to continue accessing discounts, benefits and services.
