DEBATES

Welcome to the Debating Society!
We offer a range of opportunities for beginners and experienced debaters to learn to debate and improve their public speaking skills, as well as compete in global tournaments against institutions such as Harvard, Oxford, the National University of Singapore and Monash.

Due to COVID all debating moved online for 2020 and semester 1 2021, with the hope of returning where possible to in person and online options for debating in semester 2 2021.

Currently online we offer our weekly seminars, weekly internal debates and internal competitions, with these being posted to the Debates YouTube for people to watch at a later date. Our weekly seminars are followed by an in person social, at a nearby venue.

How do I get involved?

Simply come along to our weekly meetings. First there is a seminar from a senior debater on the art of debating and then we start social debates around 6:15pm. Most people form teams for these debates on the evening, and if you’d like to make some new friends, we can find some teammates for you to debate with. These meetings are very informal and many of our members have little to no experience, so we can cater to every ability level. Don’t worry if you’ve missed a few weeks, everyone is free to join the society whenever they want.

We also run semi-regular weekend tournaments throughout the year. You can get more information in Tournaments.

Through debating, you’ll have the chance to make a lot of friends and travel to some amazing tournaments in exotic locales with the generous support of the USU. This year, our debaters will have the chance to attend tournaments in Sydney, Indonesia and Malaysia. In the past, our debaters have competed in tournaments in Chennai, Berlin, New York, Mexico and South Africa.
