Other Interests
Hi, I'm Hoang Minh, a first-year Comm/Law student from Singapore! One big thing about me is, well, I'm a big back ! In fact, I have a group chat where we go around Sydney eating various buffets. (I always win). I'm also an avid enjoyer of History, and yes, I do think about the fall of the Roman Empire at least twice a week. In my spare time, you'll find me hitting cocks (in the form of badminton), cooking a feast or playing cards. I also love meeting new people and socialising, find me at random society and club events.

Describe the key roles and responsibilities of a USU Board Director.
A USU Board Director has many responsibilities, but a director must never forget that, first and foremost, their duty is to act in the best interests of its members. Every subsequent decision they make as a director in overseeing the strategic direction of the Union should flow from that responsibility. That includes overseeing the finances and governance of USU, ensuring USU allocates resources as efficiently as possible with minimal wastage. Board Directors should also ensure that all the proceedings of the Board are transparent, to promote accessibility to the wider student body and accountability for USU’s actions.
How will you ensure that you can commit the time required to be an effective Board Director?
From the moment I entered university, I have been heavily involved in a plethora of extra-curricular activities, which have greatly honed my time management skills. Despite this, I do acknowledge that the role of a USU Board Director requires a high level of responsibility and commitment. If elected, I will prioritise Board duties by structuring my schedule around meetings and key commitments, even if that means reducing workload in other areas such as studies or extracurriculars, such as clubs and societies.
How will you represent the best interests of the student community, while also representing the best interests of the USU?
I am a strong believer that representing students and the USU are not mutually exclusive; USU is the STUDENT union after all. When approached thoughtfully, their interests are oftentimes closely aligned or even the same. By actively engaging with students to understand their needs, it falls on me to employ USU resources to deliver practical and sustainable solutions rather than short-term fixes. It is my goal to make decisions that not only help improve the university experience of my fellow students but also improve the long-term effectiveness of USU for future generations.
Identify an area of the USU where you would like to see improvement and explain how this will be of benefit to the organisation and/or students.
Improving the accessibility and transparency of USU processes is an area I feel passionately about. As a student who only recently joined USYD myself, I can attest that many new and even existing students are often unaware of the services and support the USU offers, if not unclear on how to navigate them. Similarly, for Clubs and Societies, bureaucratic processes can confuse even the most seasoned of execs. Improving communication and reducing unnecessary bureaucracy would both increase student engagement and make it easier for societies to run events, translating to more club events, ultimately benefiting the overall student experience.
