Hobbies and Interests
Hi everyone, I’m Archie, a third year student studying Finance and Political Economy and the proud father of two particularly well-fed cats. In my spare time, you can find me swimming (relatively well), trying to go to the gym (not so well), and doing my best to become a good cook (kitchen not on fire yet). Growing up with a single mum, I’m dedicated to ensuring the USU is a fighting student union that helps with cost of living relief. Students of all backgrounds deserve a genuinely memorable university experience, unmarred by financial stress or an inaccessible campus.

Describe the key roles and responsibilities of a USU Board Director.
A Board Director has to be an advocate for student interests and an agent of their needs. They must ensure that the USU remains open to student scrutiny, and should actively engage with the student community, particularly minority groups, to address diverse needs and enhance the campus experience. This means being scrutinous about the operation of the USU, speaking up and monitoring its governance to maintain transparency and accountability. Their leadership should foster an inclusive and responsive environment that truly represents the student body.
How will you ensure that you can commit the time required to be an effective Board Director?
Being a Board Director comes with significant responsibility, I am committed to prioritising it above my other commitments accordingly. Moreover, my experience working for organisations like the Australian Foreign Public Service and a plethora of extra-curriculars has sharpened my time management skills. I know how to make time for the things that matter. In the past, I have successfully managed a full-time study load while working multiple jobs and staying active in societies, so I am very confident I will have more than enough time to contribute to being an active Board Director that puts students first.
How will you represent the best interests of the student community, while also representing the best interests of the USU?
The USU is a student union and must fight tooth and nail to protect student and staff welfare to see campus life flourish. The lack of widely advertised and transparent consultation under a conservative-led board for big changes like incorporation stands in the way of this. Board directors must always champion the interests of students and staff, even when it’s hard and especially when it involves holding the university accountable. They shouldn’t hide behind surveys filled with leading questions. If students are questioning whether they can trust the board directors they elected, we’re getting something wrong.
Identify an area of the USU where you would like to see improvement and explain how this will be of benefit to the organisation and/or students.
It costs too much to exist at university. Buying lunch shouldn’t make you gasp at the price, and the cost of essential items shouldn’t be far beyond what you’d pay off-campus. Students don’t hang around on campus because they just can’t afford to. I will push the USU to cap meal prices at outlets at $10, and expand FoodHub hours and offerings. I’ll also work with the SRC to revive the second-hand textbook shop that used to be upstairs in the Wentworth building. The opportunity to take courses students find interesting shouldn’t be gatekept costs of expensive materials or textbooks.
