Describe the key roles and responsibilities of a USU Board Director.
Providing vibrant ‘ campus life’is the responsibility of a board director. International students can also feel at home with the advocacy of a board director. USU Board is sponsored by the membership fee and revenue from on-campus outlets, and a director must be observant of what the students want and represent that directly by executing solutions through their budgetary powers. USU is the student body that oversees the USYD CEO to ensure students get what they deserve. A board director needs to be transparent, on top of things, and incredibly honest and communicative to the student body.
How will you ensure that you can commit the time required to be an effective Board Director?
Passion is the key! The USU board director is representing thousands of students to make sure their voices are being heard so this commitment will take absolute priority in my life. As someone who has balanced various extra-curricular activities and academics, time management is something I am familiar with. I will schedule around USU Board, meetings and obligations to make sure I am carrying out matters effectively. I am also excited to bring my policies and what are the best for USU forward! I will reduce my workload as a casual debating coach/ other jobs to prioritize Board work.
How will you represent the best interests of the student community, while also representing the best interests of the USU?
To represent both students and the USU, I would prioritize open communication through surveys , ensuring student concerns are heard while maintaining transparency with the USU. Initiatives like affordable, diverse food options at USU outlets benefit students while supporting financial sustainability. Supporting Mandarin-speaking mental health professionals addresses student needs while improving overall campus wellbeing. Expanding funding for societies aligns with student interests, enhancing campus life and USU engagement. By aligning student-driven initiatives with USU goals, I’ll ensure solutions are feasible, impactful, and mutually beneficial, creating a thriving, inclusive, and financially sustainable student community.
Identify an area of the USU where you would like to see improvement and explain how this will be of benefit to the organisation and/or students.
One area I’d like to see improved is the support for international students within the USU. Expanding Mandarin-speaking mental health professionals, creating more accessible payment options like WeChat/Alipay at USU outlets, and refurnishing the international student lounge into a mental health and social hub would provide vital support. This would benefit international students by addressing cultural and language barriers, promoting inclusivity, and enhancing their sense of belonging on campus. In turn, this would increase international student engagement with USU activities, increase USU funding, fostering a stronger, more diverse community and improving retention and participation in USU services and events.
