USYD Traditional Karate-do society
ABOUT US-
The USYD Traditional Karate-do Society is devoted to preserving the essence of karate through introducing it to interested uni students and staff. Karate originates in the Ryukyu Kingdom (known as Okinawa today) under the influence of Chinese martial arts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The primary style of karate that we practise at the club is Itosu-ryu. The style was founded by Anko Itosu (1830–1915), building upon the teachings he received from Shuri-te master Sokon Matsumura (1798–1890). While the club only offers a single style of training in the dojo, we also acknowledge many other styles like Shotokan, Goju-ryu, Shito-ryu and their variations in techniques and katas.
We aim not only to teach our members techniques, but also to help them to develop a deeper understanding of the values and discipline karate has to offer. By joining our community, you will have the opportunity to learn from sensei and senpai with different backgrounds across a diverse range of karate styles. If you are an experienced karateka, we highly encourage you to join us and train in your own style!
