Sydney University Symphony Orchestra Society

Founded in 1948, SUSO is one of the University of Sydney’s most established performing arts societies, comprising over 70 students from all faculties. We perform in four concerts each year and organise regular social events. SUSO’s Principal Conductor since 2013 is Luke Spicer.
Over the past few years, we’ve performed with some well-known soloists, such as Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto no. 1 with Katherine Lukey, and Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto no. 1 with Kenichi Mizushima. Another recent highlight was combining with Pacific Opera in 2019 to perform Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel und Gretel.
In order to play challenging repertoire and maintain high musical standards despite being primarily non-conservatorium based, SUSO membership is by audition.

Why join us?
SUSO is a cohort of tight-knit musicians that enjoy playing orchestral/chamber music regularly, it’s also a great way to meet new people at uni.

Famous FOMO experiences on offer
Our orchestra camp is a highly anticipated annual tradition where we prepare for upcoming concerts and relax with the other members after rehearsals!

Meet ups & Community
Aside from our weekly rehearsals and BBQs, places at SUSO trivia nights and concert afterparties are hotly coveted.
